02 F150 FX4 Tires

I've got an 02 F150 FX4 with the 17 in. factory wheels. I'm about to buy new tires and I'd like to get something larger than the 265/70r17 but stay with the wheels that are on it. I was wondering how much larger I could go without any rub or issues. Also curious if I should spend the extra money to purchase 10 ply or if that is just overkill. Thanks

When I was looking for tires, I thought I ran across info somewhere that mentioned that you could run a 285/70r17 without issues. If you go to 315 then you would rub on extreme turning this may depend on the style of tire as well. Now this would be with no lift of any kind. clearly if you install a body or suspension lift you could run much larger tires.

there is info in the "frequently asked questions" section at the top of this generation page ....but the link for this info wasn't working

10 ply tires not needed on the F150......... infact, the heavy duty tires are LT265 x 70 x 17 ........ the LT is light truck ........... that is overkill as most trucks are running P265 x .......... which is a passenger car rating, and less sidewall stiffness than the LT... and most of the P series ride a LOT BETTER than the LT tires.

Sounds like P285/70r17 should work
