On the drivers side here is nothing holding the drive axle in besides the inner hub flange, but on the passenger side the inner axle is c-clipped so it'll be tighter even though there is a slip joint in the middle of it.
Yeah, as Conanski said nothing retains that axle shaft inside the diff. If you removed the spindle, you could pull that axle shaft right out. If the spindle bearings are good, all is well.
