Good nut to check on brakes.

What a wonderful spring day for a test drive. My new self adjusters on my front brakes work perfectly, stop fast and straight. However while on my cruise I had my transmission linkage come loose which had me under the truck alongside the road making the necessary repair. OK here's the part I want to pass on. This repair exposed a situation that could have been very serious. There is a lock nut that holds the pushrod to the master cylinder, mine was loose and when bumped just fell out causing a "NO BRAKE CONDITION" pedal to the floor. I haven't given this nut any thought since I replaced the old Master Cylinder several years ago, but It is obviously one that should be routinely checked if your using the stock M/C set up. Here is a pic of the nut I'm talking about. I also posted a pic I took today on my cruise, if you look real close you can see a fire watch tower at the very top of the peak in the background, called "Sawmill Peak". The Tiger stripes on my door are a little easer to see. I will eventually reshoot that door, at least that's the plan.

Jim, Thanks for the tip on checking the lock nut on the brake. I'll check mine tomorrow. You have a very pretty truck. Patrick

Thanks for the tip, Jim. I had to resist the urge to crawl under my truck. I'm in my work clothes, so i'd best not do it this morning.

Your truck looks great. I agree with John, paint later. That is a wintertime activity.

I'm not familiar with how that linkage looks but would it be possible to drill a hole in the bolt after the nut and run a cotter pin through. This would prevent the nut from ever loosening to the point of falling off.

Hi Jeffrey, I wouldn't want to answer that as it would only be a guess from me. So I will leave that answer to one of the more qualified folks to answer.

Drilling that actuator rod could weaken it. When the locknut is tightened against the end piece, it isn't going anywhere. It worked on millions of cars and trucks since the early '40's.

Very timely under the bridge! This weekend I rebuilt a pedal assembly for a 50 F1. New bushings, new shaft, NOS pedals, everything de rusted, cleaned and painted:

Notice the piece I missed! The check nut....I had left it in the solvent bucket. I don't know if I would have caught that or not on the install so thank you very much. That could have been really bad in a few years.

Excellent tip Jimmy!!
I'm sure glad you were able to find it BEFORE it made itself known. Someone is definitely smiling down on you.

Thanks for passing this on
Bobby
