Snorkel how-to? Sort of...

Ok so I'm not really looking for a Snorkle just for the sake of the look.

It's no secret that under hood real estate is at a premium in these things at best, and I went and added a Hypermax turbo kit to my idi, and anyone familiar with those knows it manages to stuff a double stack of waste basket sized air filters right on top the engine. Not the best place for pulling air.

What I'm really after is a solution for moving those air filters outside. Number 1 for some cooler air and number 2 to get back some freakin space around the engine so I don't have to half disassemble everything just to fill the washer fluid tank.

Ok so that last bit isn't for real, but I'm sure you get it.

Anyone know if this has already been invented and a link to said pioneering soul?

You may want to check on the sportsmobile forum or other site that specializes in the 4x4 conversions. I've seen snorkels on those vehicles. It may give you a starting point or ideas to address your needs.

That was my initial thought too----honestly I've never seen such an arrangement on a van or pick up either, at least ones that double as daily drivers.

Would be interesting to see what has been done---has to be a head turner for sure.

I think that banks sells an air cleaner type of thing that is not a snorkle but puts a ram air type of piece into play. I think it goes down around the bumper area and is a big scoop. On f250 I used to have it had a scoop type intake track that protruded just forward of the radiator support, when I fixed up a K&N FIPK type of air cleaner I left it in place to put 'cooler' air into the cleaner. Now I dont think banks or anyone will have such a thing but you can manuf one if so inclined. There is a thing on the 6.0diesel site for cutting a hole in the rad support and opening up the air cleaner a little bigger for cooler air to get in forget what they call it (zoodad?). anyhow you ae limited by you imagination and ability to make stuff.

I love this idea. Even on the gassers, that intake tangle is pesky.

My first thought for snorkels was FJ's.

Next would be the LandRovers.

Then there's the Quigley photo albums, like this.

The last one is the most fun.
