Between Cab and Bed

Is there supposed to be anything mounted on the cab between the cab and the bed? I have this metal rectangle bolted to the back of the cab and I have no idea what it is. Never noticed it until I was under the truck changing fluids and happened to look up and discovered it. Any ideas?

Ha ha ha, too funny. But it's not black, it's greyish/brown, and about 18 inches across by 6 or 8 inches....smack dab in the middle from right to left and up and down. Wondered if it could have been something for a topper...only because I have wear marks from where a seal was between the cab and a topper.

I'm curious, who said it was black?

I misread one of the above posts when he said big back panel, I read black. Wow. Learn something everyday. Is that back panel that flimsy? Rather ingenious. Thanks all.

It's not necessarily that it's flimsy, it's just that it's a large panel with nothing attached to it. It in effect becomes a giant speaker as it vibrates going down the road. The little plate Ford bolted to it helps to damp vibrations.
