302 Owners....

I just changed the oil for the first time on my truck. The owners book says 5 quarts of oil. I poured in the 5 and checked the oil and the oil just comes to the "add a quart mark" on the dipstick. So does it take 6 or 5? The dipstick is seated properly down it there... Got a Motorcraft FL-1A filter....Any ideas?

The owner's manual is wrong, and the dipstick doesn't register adequate levels.

the actual level is 6 quarts. It's been tha tway from 1987-1996 models, and I believe is that way on previous years.

Anything less than 5.5 quarts and you'll get knock. that is one way I knew my '89 was low on oil when it leaked.

My '94 takes six to get to the full mark, but leaks down rather quickly to the add mark and stays there. Running a quart low has no bad effects and a cleaner driveway. No noises and I still have 40-60psi of pressure.

The book isn't wrong, it's correct, just a little misleading. The engine takes 5, the filter takes 1 so put in 6 and it'll come up to the line properly.

I had the same dillema. Ford said 5 but Chiltons said 6. It takes 6. Off stang's last post, who changes the oil and not the filter? Thats just dumb if you don't.

You put an entire quart in the filter?

No, but it takes that much to prime all the oil lines to and from the filter and also the filter.
