Roof Rack/Air Bags connected?

I would like to remove the factory racks on my 2016 Expedition King Ranch, and replace with Thule racks. Not sure what solution I will go with, but my question now involves removing the factory rack.

The rep I talked to at one of the online sellers tells me that some vehicles have sensors or wiring connected to the rack, and that I may have issues with the air bag if I mess with the rack. Anyone have any information on this?

Thanks in advance.

I have a hard time believing that. Also most of the rack companies make variants that use either the entire rack system on the truck, or replace the existing cross rails with their own. No need in most instances to take the rails off.

If I want two kayaks side by side, without increasing the height of the vehicle, there is a reason to replace the factory rack. The only way to get an after market crossbar that is wider than the existing rack is to attach on top. It looks tacky, and it won't fit in my garage.

Is there anyone who has specific knowledge on this? I tried to ask the question on the "Ask a Ford Engineer" forum, but the filter said I was not allowed to post there. What's up with that?

It will have zero affect on the Air Bags.

The first thing I did when I got my Expy was take that gaudy *** thing off. There were no wires involved. You will just need various Torx drivers. Nothing extravagant for an overly extravagant rack (at least on Limited and Platinum trim levels).

Thank you. Rack Removed. No issues. Custom aluminum rack to be fabricated and powdercoated black this week.

First I've heard of roof racks ever having had sensors on any vehicle...
