I didn't think it was especially off-topic, but I can easily start a new discussion if it fits your definition of off-topic? jim

It isn't up to me. I am just a user like you. Different forums have different rules about on and off topic. This thread was started about Hood louvres by another party. Oil coolers while related is off topic from that. Am I tend to play by the rules given the opportunity.
With that said I have seen coolers mounted along side of automatic transmissions. Smaller ones mounted to a frame member that were tilted to catch some air.
I personally have one mounted below the front bumper of a 1990 E 150. I believe Ford Motor has placed coolers under the bumper or at least lower than the radiator. There is this one that might meet that location. Brand New Ford Mercury Transmission Power Steering Cooler FZ 3F749 CA | eBay
And Ford has placed oil coolers in openings of the radiator core support.

In this case the discussion evolved beyond its original scope---hasn't be too much of a problem so far, seems appropriate given the nature of this forum.
Jim's question wasn't so off topic it requires another thread, IMHO anyway.

For the past 14 years, I have been the owner of a sewing group of several thousand ladies who ask for help keeping their sewing machines working. I understand the subject of off topic, believe me.
The point is, you are not the mod here. If you felt it was off topic, contacting Tom would have been the proper path. It is his forum to moderate.
Done and done. On to more pressing issues involving vans. jim
