06 5.4L New VCT didn't fix it???

I had the typical issue of bad VCT's and p0022 code. I unused the VCT's and it quit. I just replaced them a few hours ago and it still has issues. Any thoughts on what next

I replaced the VCT Solenoids. I had the typical issue of timing chain slap and rough idle when in gear, however the New VCT Solenoids didn't fix the issue. I can unplug the VCT's and it clears up. I thought for sure the New VCT's would fix it but it didnt?

The problem you're describing is worn cam phasers. And I'd advice you to replace the timing components at the same time.

Any idea how much a dealer would charge to do it?

Have no idea, but it's pretty expensive to have a dealer do it....

Can't even find a auto shop who will do the timing job.
I must have screwed up majorly by buying an Expedition but I always have bought Ford. What years of 5.4L are the problem years. If I buy a Ford in the future what years should I stay away from

DIY'ers can even do this job at home, so if the auto shops you've asked don't want to do it then I'd suggest you look for a better shop.... It's a relatively big job, but it's not that complicated. Just time consuming. The most complicated thing is to set the timing on it, which isn't hard if you follow the directions in the factory shop manual.

The VCT system was introduced from 2005, apart from a couple issues with the first ones, it's a pretty reliable system, though as with anything else, components can and will wear out.

In my opinion I wouldn't rely on a video. I would get the factory shop manual. Either in paper (my preference) or on a DVD.

So, another question. I started having this issue a couple of hours after replacing the number 5 coil. Not sure if it's a coincidence or not but I replaced number 4 and 5 coil and a couple hours later I started having this issue. Any Thoughts??

I purchased my '05 Navigator last fall knowing it had code P0022. I tried the VCT solenoid first, it worked for about 20 miles then the problem came back. I then replaced the phaser. When I fired up the engine it ran somewhat smoother but it tripped the CEL within 3 miles. Code reader returned the same darn P0022 code so I swapped camshaft position sensors. The problem stayed on the same side.

I then found a few different Apps for my phone, I was using a bluetooth ELM327, that could actually read each camshaft position in degrees. Turns out the timing chain jumped a tooth so when I marked and re-assembled everything with the new phaser (old one was definitely broke) I still had a phasing problem. With the data I had I knew I had to go back in to bring the camshaft back in the correct position.

In my post about that adventure it turned out I moved the camshaft one more tooth the wrong direction. So third time in I got everything lined up.

I know I am living on borrowed time, I really need to replace the entire camshaft drive parts to fix it right. But for now I am enjoying driving my newest toy.
