My 88 E150 has no swaybar, Why?

I was ordering parts for my suspension and went to measure the sway bar, and there was none.. There are no brackets or nuts where the sway bar bushings would go on the frame, though there are holes in the frame for them..It is hard to tell but it looks like the brackets may have been there long ago..

The mounting brackets for the Stabilizer Bar End Links are not there either.. The brackets for the end links are held on with the bolt that holds the radius arm to the I-beam

Do aftermarket stabilizer bars all bolt to this same bracket that is supposed to be bolted on with the radius arm bolt?

1975/91 E150/350 is the same, except 1983/91 E250/350 diesel, except 1989/91 E350 with 158" & 176" wheelbases.

I had a wheel bearing failure on a '90 E 150. As a result of that on the driver's side the I beam axle dragged on the asphault grinding down the bolt head of the bolt through the sway bar link bracket (5C499). Because there is some damage to that 5C499 bracket I have been looking for a replacement. My wreckingyard wanderings have found several E series and F series that do not have a sway bar and never have had one.

I thought that was a bit weird.

D5TZ-5C499-A .. Front Stabilizer Bar Mounting Bracket - Right/Left is the same / Obsolete

Applications: 1975/79 F100/350 2WD / 1975/91 E150/350 / 1979/83 E100.

No Ford dealer or obsolete parts vendor has any.

Yeah I have discovered this. I have even considered buying a junk van just to get this part. I think I can get the old bracket welded up.

As for the bolt, well it is shot and remains my next project to extract the bolt and bracket. I may post those results when I start into it.

However I am stealing this thread .....

Thanks very much NumberDummy
You do such a great service for everyone here!!!
If you wouldn’t mind, I might need some complete part numbers for a couple of parts so i can try to hunt them down..
I got the first set of part numbers from my drawing.. Mine is from a 88 Ford service manual on CD Dave Graham
I thought it was the drawing for the 1/2 ton E150 but your part numbers are a bit different..

Bracket to I-beam - 5C499

Stabilizer bar bushing retainer - 5C498

Stabilizer Bar Assembly - 5494

Your diagram
Bracket to I-beam - 5C499

Stabilizer bar bushing retainer - 5486/5C498 According to your drawing I would need the 5486 If I am reading that right..

Stabilizer Bar Assembly - 5494 ,,, Is that correct, the same bar for E150 - E350

Misc bolts..
And how do I find out what bolt that is that holds the stabilizer link Assembly to the bracket?
I would guess it needs to be a grade 8 with preferably a smooth shank on it where it goes through the bushing sleeve, along with fitting fairly snug... And a locking nut on the back side

My diagram
Bolt -605704

Yours
Bolt - N605704-S What is the ( AB-156-W)?

Last is the Screw/Bolt holding the retainer on for the stabilizer bar. My diagram says Screw and doesn’t show a nut on the back side of the bolt.. I guess that is a self tapping Screw?
I guess screw or bolt with nut, what ever I can get in there to hold it.. Maybe grade 8?

Again thanks for all the great work you do here...

PS I have that 85 E150 but that would be a big job to get the brackets off and I really didn't want to scrap it!

I was wondering if mine maybe never had one but I can almost make out where something was on the bottom of the frame where the sway bar bushings would have mounted, but I am not positive.

I also called trucksprings.com and ask the guy there if aftermarket sway bars have their own mounting hardware and he said not for this van, they all use the factory bracket..

The bar and the 5C498 bracket and link ends are available. Mostly aftermarket. Autozone (and Ebay) carries the link ends and looks like the bar mount to the frame. (5C498) Yes there are screws that hold the 5C498 bracket

You will need two of these D5TZ-5C499-A brackets if they are not on your van. Finding two is a monumental task compared to the other parts.

The stabilizer bar may be different diameters for 150 to 350.

I thought it was the drawing for the 1/2 ton E150 but your part numbers are a bit different.

Part numbers & pic (here it is again) from the 1980/89 Ford Light Truck Parts Catalog, available on a C/D from hipoparts.com

Bracket to I-beam - 5C499 = See post #4.

Your diagram

Stabilizer bar bushing retainer - D5UZ-5486-A .. Same applications as stabilizer bar.
GREEN SALES CO. in Cincinnati OH has 9 = 800-543-4959.

Stabilizer Bar Assembly .. E3UZ-5482-A (replaced D5UZ-5482-A), the same bar for 1975/91 E150/E350 & 1979/83 E100.
FORD PARTS ONLY in Bayamon Puerto Rico has 1 = 787-786-9180.

Misc bolts..

And how do I find out what bolt that is that holds the stabilizer link Assembly to the bracket?
It's metric after 1979.

I would guess it needs to be a grade 8 with preferably a smooth shank on it where it goes through the bushing sleeve, along with fitting fairly snug... And a locking nut on the back side

My diagram
Bolt -605704

Yours
Metric Bolt - N605704-S What is the (AB-156-W - Ignore, it's the FoMoCo dealers Standard Parts Bin location!).

Notice there are two possible part numbers, the one with the N is metric.

You'll have to see which wrench fits.

Thanks for the part number Action410... I am going to be replacing the Springs, radius arm bushings and pivot bushings within the next 2 weeks, that would be the time to install the brackets!.. I guess it doesn't hurt to drive the van without a sway bar?

I bet if I were to pull one off of my 85 e150, use it for a pattern, that it wouldn't be that much work to build one...

I just replaced the right side spring, insulator & shock, both stabilizer links, and bar mount bushings, brake pads and one rotor.

I have the left side spring with that damaged bolt and then I sell it.
