2002 f150 revs than goes in gear but reverse is fine..
So my aunt has a 2002 ford f150 king ranch 5.4l and a night ago it started this problem which when you put it in drive which she has to put it in 2nd for it when she pushs on the pedal it will rev up to 2500rpms than jerks and goes and its usely fine till she stops than goes and it does it again...
Than today it wouldn't even go in anything but reverse... So than we herd about the Range Sensor on the side of the transmission and it seems like it was it so i unplug it when it was running and when i push on the pedal and it revs up to 2500rpms it will go forward and have power . So we went to get a new range sensor after like 4 hours trying to get the dam thing off and another 2 to get it back on.. i started it up and ony reverse works again... So i unplug the harness to it again and we got the gears but 1st and 2nd will just rev and go.
We at a lost right now i even tighten the shift screws under the dash cause our expedition was loose at one time and the gear shifter was loose like hers. But even tighten the bolts it still don't fix the looseness or even the gears..
Is this a transmission problem? OR even the torq covertor?

You can't intelligently diagnose this issue without knowing how it all works.
Very first thing there may be an OD switch light on or flashing.
This tells you the computer detected a problem in the electrical circuits to the transmission.
If it is mechanical in nature then it may not show these trouble indicators that are not electrical faults.
.
Operation;
Gear shifter in gear moves the selector switch.
This reports a condition to the computer that operates the Electric Pressure solenoid in the transmission. and opens the first gear A solenoid.
This operation gates fluid to the correct channel according to the selector position.
.
Not moving the truck in drive tells you the fluid path has not been opened for some reason to first gear and the A Solenoid has not opened.
A code would indicate an electrical issue.
No code would indicate an issue on the valve body or other associated parts.
.
Is there any OD lamp on or any code set as looked for with a Scanner?
This is the first place to check out to get a sense of direction.
As a side note, there is no solenoid to operate for reverse because the trans never shifts out of that gear so is strictly a mechanical function of the shift linkage when put in reverse.
Beyond this, if you cannot handle the issue, a shop has to get involved.
Good luck..

There is no od lamp or any codes pop up when she tried her code scanner.
She made it home but said she can smell transmission fluid burning now on the way home.. which i would say not a good sign at all..
She said it still goes if you push on the gas than it revs and jerks than goes normally .
looking around it might be the forward drum...
I did tell her to take it to a transmission shop if she can get there and see if they can pull up any transmission codes.

2002 f150 revs than goes in gear but reverse is fine..
Free-revving, then a lurch/clunk a second later as it engages was the first issue I ever encountered with my first car, a 1995 Mitsubishi Mirage. It did it in forward gears, to which the service manual stated it was related to the REAR Clutch. In it happened in Reverse, it would be the FRONT Clutch inside the transmission. Either way, you're looking at a full rebuild
These issues, combined with how hush-hush Mitsubishi kept their service/rebuild info on their automatics is the basis for why I swear by manual transmissions. Simplicity is so under-rated
