whine in rear end
#17
Well, seems it is a pinion bearing. I pulled the driveshaft and both axles, it seemed ok until I noticed the pinion nut had backed off a little bit and had a very minimal amount of in/out on the pinion. I tightened the nut. I put a new ujoint in the rear also. Then went for a drive and the noise was more noticable. Still only at 65ish, but more noticable now. I guess tightening the nut put more pressure on the bearings and made the noise worse. I'm off early tomorrow, so I'll tear it apart and fix it. Crap.

Thanks Aaron, it does suck. I started on it an hour and a half ago. It's apart, the bearings all look pretty good to me. I'm not sure what to think. I'm going to run to see my machinist with the pinion and bearings and see what he says. Doesn't hurt to get a 2nd opinion, especially one as good as his is. I'm sure I will put new bearings on the pinion anyway, just would like to hear what he says.
Thanks for the link Mike.

Went and talked with my machinist. He noticed a little odd wear on the rollers on the small pinion bearing. We talked a bit and he said to do what I figured on doing. Just change them both. Went to the parts store and they didn't have the big bearing or race, it will be in tomorrow. Timkens this time. Dad's going to run in and pick it up for me. If I don't get started tomorrow afternoon it will probably be friday.
