Clear coat seperation

I need to get my '97 Explorer to the paint shop, the clear coat is coming off and some dings. What should I expect to hear from them? Can my original paint be saved or should I hear them say it'll all have to be stripped down to do base coat, clear coat.
I don't want to walk in there without a clue as to what to expect.

The clear coat could be peeling for a variety of reasons....but in short, to ensure good adhesion, the paint should be taken down to bare and start again ensuring that all the primers, paints are compatible and applied within the mfg's specifications.

You can't (well shouldn't) put good paint over bad. If they just painted color or clear over the original poor adhering paint what will happen when that original starts coming off in places? Yup,new paint right along with it! So,brace yourself,uh maybe brace your wallet. But ,older vehicle, quicky ,cheapy paint job? It will last for while .Good luck. gary
