Replacing ZF5 4WD Tailhousing: Gas and Diesel the Same?

The tailhousing split on my 1991 Ford 7.3 F350. It is 4WD. I need to replace it.

Is the tailhousing the same between the gas and diesel?

Im 99.9% sure they are the same. I am a little less sure about s42 vs s47, but afaik, they are the same also.

The bore depth for the shift shaft to slide in differs between the -42 and -47, as well as the shaft itself. There is a deep and shallow bore, on the -42 the deep one is in the front case half, the -47 it is in the rear. You can run a -42 front with a -47 rear, but not the other way around.
Also, changing the tail housing requires a complete disassembly of the trans, it doesn't just bolt on the back end.

Just to add to this, only a big block gasser will work, the small block is a few inches longer.

Damn. I thought I found an extension housing for my project truck on a 1990 4x2 F Super duty but I have an S47 and this trans would be an S42. When did Ford quit making the F Super Duty? I tried a Google search but all I get are hits for the regular Super Duty.

I found this doing a Google search.

Introduced in 1998 for the 1999 model, the Ford Super Duty was for the first time cosmetically and mechanically unique from the F-150. The first generation of the Ford Super Duty would run from 1999-2007 with a redesign signaling a second generation in 2008 that would run only until 2010.

Then here is Wiki on the total story.

The F Super Duty is a 10 lug truck. Not the same as a Super Duty.

Bulletpruf, I’m not certain but I think it was 1997. 1996 for sure as I’ve seen 96 ten lug trucks for sale.

Thanks. The S47 transmission came out in 1995, I believe, so there's a chance I'll find an F Super Duty 4x2 S47 trans with the correct extension housing.

F-SuperDuty was 1987 to 1997 with some 1998's thrown in to muddy the waters(there were no model year 1998 F350 or F-SuperDuties made, but some 97's were titled as 98's)
the F-SuperDuty used a 4 wheel drive trans with a trans mount parking brake instead of a transfer case mount tailshaft.
