1989 Ln 8000 brakes

Hello, I'm brand new to this site so I hope I'm in the right area. I'm working on a1989 ford Ln8000. It has a blown wheel seal. I've done many in my day but never on a hydraulic system that also has the Datyon/spoke wheels. I belive it has the Lucas Girling system. I have everything apart but I can't get the brakes to ease up so I can get the drum/hub off. I've beat the crap out of it for an hr and have it half off. Tried the adjuster but it seems to be frozen. I'm no sure I'm doing that right. The shoes are on top and bottom, not side to side like a car so the adjuster isn't on the bottom. Any pictures, help or advice would be appreciated. I'm completely stuck!!! Don't hesitate to ask me if you need more info! Appreciate it and this site!

Welcome to FTE. We also have a Large truck forum, but answers on LG brakes are hard to come by.

Are you familiar with them and the spring loading etc?

This might help:

http://www.bepco.biz/sites/default/f...cas%20Book.pdf

Google "lucas girling brake...." and add "adjustment", "repair", "removal", "parking brake", etc.

Good luck and be careful. Don't take anything apart that might be a spring-loaded chamber. Post 8 here, read it and live:

OK, I got it off after I caged the brakes. Everything went well till I tried to put the hub back in. I used the old races and put in new bearings as well as a new seal. It was a scotseal. The ring you use to hit it in seemed to be a little wide compared to the old one. I'm not sure if that's why it's not going on. Is there a special way to get these on? Oh, the seal seemed to seat but didn't look flush. I heard the ping like it was in fully when I went around it with the deadblow. I got all my parts from the local Napa. It's about an inch and a half to short. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you for the previous response. Couldn't have done this without that info.

If the bearings and seals were not identical to the OE, then that's the problem. No amount of forcing is going to make that work. Get identical parts.

OK, so get them from the Ford Dealership? I was going to but my guy from Napa said he had the cross for them. They are not the same numbers as OE but are Timken.

Bearings have numbers on them and should match. But if they don't, move on to another supplier.

If you have a bearing number, post it, or post your VIN and warranty plate info, that might lead us to some parts info.

Good morning all,

I've checked with my local Ford heavy duty truck shop. Seal and bearings check out. I could see the ring inside the hub was shiny and bent a little from removing the original seal. I'm hoping that does it. But.......over the long weekend I noticed it is the adjuster cylinder leaking and probably wasn't wheel seal. Does anyone have any detailed instructions on how to replace that? Plug hydraulic lines to it etc? Just doing cylinder and not the whole backing plate. Thank for your help in advance.
