Eight months, 7k miles - An Update
#17
I know many years ago when I was on a Minuteman ICBM launch crew in Montana, we had some 1974 Chevy Suburbans we drove to the remote sites. (The ones I worked at were 70-150 miles from the base.) The Suburbans had 454 4V engines, and it was a good thing they could be filled with gas at the site because in the winter I seriously doubt they could have made it round trip! Probably got about 8-10MPG at best!!

The denser air in the wintertime also changes the air/fuel mixture, giving a slight increase in the amount of air for combustion. I think the biggest thing is the warm up, as it will take longer in winter, and the oil will be thicker for that time.
Somebody somewhere has probably calculated all the factors...

I should have taken a picture a few months ago. We stayed in Bear Valley at about 7,000 feet elevation. We filled the tank, reset the meter, and headed down hill. We were only doing about 50 MPH, because hey, it's a mountain road. However, for the first 10 miles the meter was showing 99 MPG. It wasn't until we started doing some little uphills that the MPG came down to something a little more sane like ... 45 MPG....
