Yeah, I'm sure someone with an engineering degree out at Ford World Headquarters has figured that out. I am mostly just wondering, does the extra cooler give you 2x the cooling capacity? 10x?

I guess one real-world way to look at it is to ask if anyone WITHOUT the extra cooler has done heavy towing in hot weather, and what their transmission temps have been.

Wonder if @Mark Kovalsky has any perspective for this one.

No, I don't know. I left Ford 7 years before this truck was built. And I never worked on the F-150.

A truck with medium duty tow package requires a new radiator, auxiliary transmission cooler and upgraded front stabilizer bar if you decide to add them. The standard radiator has lines from the transmission cooler (not aux cooler) which enter on the driver's side. The aux cooler does not tap into the heavy duty radiator. The lines run from the transmission cooler thermostat to the aux transmission cooler. The difference in part numbers is a FL3Z-8005 (medium duty) and HL3Z-8005 (heavy duty). By the way, this little nuance is not listed in the tow package description.
Hello,

I am looking at outfitting my 2016 F-150 5.0L with the aux trans cooler. I have identified all the parts for the aux trans cooler (the aux cooler itself, new inlet pipe, outlet pipe, bracket), but I am unclear as to whether I have to upgrade the radiator itself (from FL3Z-8005-B to HL3Z-8005-C).

Is the upgraded radiator really necessary? From your description, it sounds like the FL3Z-8005-B simply has an extra piece (oil-to-water trans cooler) that would simply go unused if the aux trans cooler & associated inlet/outlet pipes were installed. Am I missing something?

Are there any other ways in which he HL3Z-8005-C differs from the FL3Z-8005-B? Does the HL3Z-8005-C (HD radiator) offer increased engine cooling, as well? That would certainly be a reason to change upgrade it.

Thanks,
James

According to another member who has done the installation, the radiator is fine. Just cap off the inlets.

Correction: My 5.0 is different from the 3.5.

I thought you installed the aux in line with the rad cooler that way you get both.

I really wish this subject would get answered. H
I have a 2016 expedition i want to add an aux cooler to and there is a distinct lack of info other than part numbers.

Do not delete the cooler in the radiator. It is a VERY effective cooler. You lose a lot of cooling capacity without it.

That's a terrible idea, the trans most flow to the radiator heat exchanger first before the aux cooler. Without you will lose efficiency. Remember you are adding a aux cooler not deleting the primary.

But that's not how the stock setup is on the 5.0. It uses the aux cooler as a stand alone cooler.

The 3.5 uses both coolers, radiator and aux cooler. So for the 3.5 you do not block off the radiator lines as you would with the 5.0.
