Road Trip: rear end noise.
Drove from Bay Area to Mesa Verde Ntl park. At park noticed rear end noise and occasional slippage when applying gas coming from rear end from dead stop only not between gears. Seems noise coming from rear axle somewhere not transmission. 1994 Ford Aero AWD.
I'm in the boonies. Runs fine at speed. What are my options and what is likely to be causing this and the fix. The darn thing only has 56,000 miles. At lodge waiting for ideas. Tia, brgds.

Slippage when applying gas would come from the transmission, not the rear end.
Is the noise coming from one side or the other of the rear end, or the center? Noise from either side would indicate wheel bearing. Center would point to differential or U-joint.
You could try driving home and keep listening for it to get worse, which will help pin-point the problem.

Seems in the rear. Has only occurred twice, when starting from dead start. Starting back today for home. . Pulled off catalytic cover as tabs on front off rusted off. We'll see as I drive. Thought maybe something in the limited slip diff might be causing, sound definitely in back maybe passenger side. I'll let you folks know what happens.
