Starter ring gear question -another one

I am approaching the assembly stage with my engine and have discovered that the flywheel gear needs to be replaced. I have another flywheel that has the same issue. I counted 112 teeth on my flywheel, and Mac's has a ring gear with the same tooth count and the diameters appear to be the same, but the description only mention the V8. Do you guys think this is the same as mounted behind the 226 6 cylinder with a 4sp crashbox?

Howard, if the gear count on the starter and flywheel gear match, the starters are interchangeable. The starter that came from your spare engine has been running on another member's V8 powered F5 for some time, now. Tooth count and diameter the same, you should be good. Perhaps someone who knows for sure will weigh in.

Seems like this has been discussed before, and there is a difference. Also some discussion of "correct" tooth count on flat-6 starter drives.

Here's all I could find, it has a source for the ring gears on the second page. But they are described as 114-tooth?

The 114 tooth gears for the 226 are near impossible to find. Best way to find one is off a donor engine. They require the 9 tooth starter gear. The next best thing would be the 112 tooth gear, it came on the 226 with an 11" clutch. It uses the 10 tooth starter drive. I have seen the 112 gear more and I have two NOS.

Thanks for the responses. I am going to give the Mac's gear a shot- they have it in stock and the return policy is good. I would think that flipping the ring gear could work if one cant be found.

Oh boy- this doesn't look good. Any advocates of flipping the gear? Any idea if the flywheel is available already loaded with the correct 112 tooth gear?

Flipping the gear is a time-honored fix -- IF the front side teeth are good.

Number Dummy is correct (as usual). I know from first hand experience that the V8 112 tooth gear does NOT fit the 226 flywheel. The 2GA-6384-A is the only 112 tooth ring gear that fits and I had a heck of a time finding one that fit for my 226 a few years ago.

Howard, let us see some detail pictures. I don't remember that gear being so bad as to be un serviceable.

These are the two areas I'm concerned about. This flywheel came from the donor engine. The flywheel removed from the original (using that word loosely here!) engine is worse- but it's with my engine guy so no pictures today.

Yep, Howard, a few of those teeth don't look very good.
Ross, what is your idea on building them up with MIG if all else fails to locate one?

There's a labor of love. Should work great though?
