OD light flashing

I have a 97 4.2 V6. My OD light is flashing. The manual says to bring it in to the dealership but I don't want to pay 300 for labor and 25 for parts. Does anyone know what might be the problem. Am I stuck to going to the dealer?

Unhappy OD light flashing

I found a transmission guy who pulled the codes for free and he couldn't find anything. He noticed that the fluid was running hot and he suggested changing and adding a transmission oil cooler since I did some towing. I did what he said plus I unhooked the battery for a half hour to reset the computer. Light still flashing. I have noticed that it only flashes sometimes right after starting and usually in stop and go driving. It seems to not blink when I am in higher gear going say 50 mph. Before I changed the fluid it will race in lower gear. I haven't experienced it yet since I changed the fluid, but I have not been in the situation where it raced before yet.
Does any one have any ideas?
