89 ranger engine stumble..
Hello everyone,
New to this forum in hopes for a hail Mary. Ok I have an 89 ranger with the little 4 banger and when I start it the engine has a bad stumble but no backfire of any kind though the exhaust smells like it's running rich. Have a Ford tester and it came up with 18 and a 98 code. That's the easy part now it's time to figure out where to start cuz I haven't a clue. Back story: I got this truck from my uncle when I did a little drywall work and he gave me the truck because he couldn't get rid of the engine stumble either. In doing so he replaced a lot of part in the egr valve, fuel pressure regulator, O2 sensor, and a vacuum solenoid. If you respond can you explain and acronyms please sorry for the request but still new to all this.

check the timing belt and make sure it is not wore out and moved a tooth or 2,,,,, one thing i learned was when checking the oil on those 89 s was smell to make sure no gas smell,, i had one where the fuel pump went bad but was still working and what it was doing was spraying gas on the number one crank and piston,,,blew the crank bearings and scratch the piston wall past fixing,,,,that didnt have nothing with your problem just past experiance....
