What years tail gates are correct for these trucks? Mint ones easy to find?

 

87-97 will go right on and line up perfect
87-91 PLAIN gates have FORD stamped into them
XLT and Lariat trucks have the aluminum with a red reflector

92-96 XLTs have the aluminum as well but have a black reflector

 

It was my understanding that 1987 and 1988 were the only years that had the FORD letters stamped into them. I had a tough time finding a NOS tailgate for mine.

 

No. All 87-91 had the ford stamped into them. Even the ones with the aluminum had them, but they were covered

 

Makes me wonder if mine was replaced... dont remember seeing the ford stamp when I had the panel off. Im curious now.

 

If you get a replacement from LMC or such it will not have the letters stamped. They also weigh a lot less than NOS.

 

What do NOS gates sell for? Aftermarkets good quality or junk?

Aftermarket gates are OK for they typical grocery getter. But dont plan on actually using one. They fold up like a pretzel

 

I've got a white tailgate from a 88 Lariat (aluminum w/ red). Not mint but in nice shape. I'm in San Diego. I'll let it go for cheap...

 

I put a big dent in the original tailgate, right in one of the letters. Very hard to fix. bought one from LMC until I could find the right one. It took years, and was expensive to finally get a NOS one in the box and have it painted to match. Huge weight difference between the LMC one and NOS.
