I wonder if the increased gear count in the transmission will result in fewer rear gear options. It would make sense from a manufacturing standpoint to no have as many options.

Might be possible. But what gear set would they make standard? Rams are stock with usually a 3.92 and they still get excellent mpg with it. I could see 3.73 being the one Ford keeps or even bring back 4.10 as an option...no idea why that was limited to only the short lived Tremor F150...didn't make sense. Those would really wake the EcoBoost into a real beast.

I wanna see it go the other direction. With ten gears and a shorter first, I'd love to see top gear put the engine in the sweet spot for highway MPGs. Not sure where that is, but the best fuel economy is consistently reported by those with 3.31s and 3.15s.

You could have your cake and eat it too. The short lower gears would have great performance, and the granny top gears would make it sip fuel.

3.31 was a pretty nice gearset with the 6 speed in my 2012 ecoboost 4x4. with the deeper first of the 10-speed, I'd take 3.15 no issue.

I can understand that people who want to squeeze out every last mpg on an empty truck on the highway would like less gear but I'd prefer a 3.73 or 4.10 as standard.

I have a 4.10 in my F-150, 4.30 in my F-250 and 4.10 in my F-350. Makes a big difference when using a truck as a truck and hauling/towing loads.

But would this cause the engine to lug? I mean sure you could be at lower rpm at 70+ but is it a huge benefit? I mean it's been pretty windy this year and strong head winds and a high ratio mean you'll be dropping into direct or lower on the transmission...or same for going up a decent hill.

I think the problem may be what the "sweet spot" is as that could easily be determined by MPH, headwind, load, etc. Perhaps the overall gearing could run it in 10th in optimum conditions but drop down a gear for less-than optimal conditions?

Right, that's exactly what I'm thinking. What's wrong with cruising in 7th, 8th, or 9th if conditions require? We don't know all the ratios, but I'm thinking there's gotta be at least three overdrive gears as part of the package.

8, 9, 10 are Overdrives with 10th being 0.65:1. 7th is direct drive 1:1, 1st is 4.7:1. This was explained in the interview with Mr. Truck and the main engineer on his video.

I have no issue not being in "top" gear on the highway when there are hills or headwinds.

3.15 gears with triple overdrive makes no sense. The truck would not stay in top gear under 75.

Does it matter if it rarely uses top gear?

Good point. If the top three gears are overdrive, they're still overdrive. The question is how much overdrive. use a little, or use a lot.

Why not? The top gear of the new transmission is very close to the top gear of the current one. Why would it work great with the 6R80 with its 0.69:1 top gear and not with the 10-speed's 0.65:1 top gear?
