two wheel drive trans in four wheel drive?

Are the trans the same except for tail shaft housing/trans case adapter. I mean are the out put shafts the same spline/length?

I used my 2wd trans when I converted my 350 to 4x. Change the tail housing and the output shaft to the 4x pieces and you're good. Changing the output shaft requires complete trans disassembly though.
