1992 trans slipping from startup

1992 f150 302 automatic, just rebuilt the top end, installed new radiator and trans cooler. I had not noticed this problem prior to the repairs, but now from a stop my truck acts like it is not in drive. I will push my foot on the gas, and the rpms climb for a few seconds before banging into gear. I also have to lift my foot off the gas for it to shift in higher gears. For example, it shifts around 40 mph once I lift off the gas. It would go up to 45 or 50 if I kept my foot on the gas. Upon deceleration yesterday, it started to buck like I was driving over rail road ties. After I stopped, it was fine. Any ideas what this could be?

What transmission do you have? The 5L engine trucks of this vintage came with the mechanical AOD or an electronic E4OD overdrive transmission.

If it is an AOD I would suggest you check the TV cable adjustment. If you have an E4OD I suggest you check for codes. For either transmission make sure the fluid is at the correct level.

I have the AOD, so I will check the cable later today. I checked the fluid and it was within normal range

There is a specific procedure to properly adjust the AOD TV cable. If you don't follow the procedure you have an excellent chance of destroying the trans.

Let me google that for you

Is this something I should mess with? I am saving for college so I usually fix things myself, but if I can potentially destroy the trans, should I just bring it in?

If you're not confident, bring it in. I recommend getting it towed, driving it at all with the TV set wrong can fail the trans in a very short time.
