Need help troubleshooting

96 F250 powerstroke 7.3L 201k miles. when out into forward gears stalls out along with going into drive to reverse and vice versa. Had been taken to 3 shops and they can't find anything when hooked to a computer...
It comes and goes tho and has stalled out on me coming to complete stop or slowing down fast.

First guess would be the torque converter not unlocking when it should. But that's just speculation; I'd leave it to those with real E4OD experience to weigh in.

The last shop I sent.it.into hooked.it up and drove around to check and see if it was the torque converter not locking up and I'm knocking but they said everything was fine on that end

I was gonna say tc also. Mine went bad a few years ago. As soon as you put it in drive or reverse it would die.

What was the basis of the "everything was fine" conclusion? Did they use a device for viewing live torque converter lock status data? Again, I don't know the E4OD firsthand, but I believe with a live data device, you can monitor when the TC locks and unlocks.

Do the brake lights work?

I do believe that is what they did. Had it hooked up to a reader and drive it around. And yes they do work still going to drive it around today after work and see what happens

Could be an intermittent. (Well, I guess it is intermittent...) You'd probably need to check the TC lock/unlock status right when it happens.

I would guess it is a short in the wire that goes to the torque converter lockup solenoid.

To test this you could splice a LED light in the grounding wire between the transmission and the PCM then it will light up every time the wire gets grounded. Either by short or by command from PCM.

I would believe that if the light stays on below 35MPH then there is a short.

I don't know about in reverse, but I have had my truck idling in Drive and flipped my switch on and it killed the motor.

Attached is a "how to" PDF.
