V10 Exhaust Stud removal Journey
I just started removing the exhaust manifolds on my 01 yesterday and felt like sharing the fun/commiserating with all who have come before me. So far on the drivers side I've found:
I have new stainless hardware and gaskets to re-install. Should probably go ahead and replace the factory Y Pipe with something better while I'm in here.
Headers are not in the cards at the moment, too much other life happening at the moment.
- Plastic screws that hold the fender on don't last 200k miles.
- The undercarriage has lots of places to hide dirt.
- 3 nuts missing on the exhaust manifold.
- 2 studs snapped off while trying to remove the nuts
- ALL the nuts are too far gone to get a socket onto.
- The lower nut on piston 2 is going to be a pain to get to.
- I'm going to cut the rest of the nuts off and back get the manifold off.
- The manifold was connected to the y pipe with one almost rusted through bolt.

I have 2 tubes of Permatex on hand to lube the studs before going back into the heads, once I finally get that far.

Do you have a MIG welder available to weld nuts to the studs that are broken off even or recessed into the head? If so, I would try that first before drilling and Easy Outing them, much faster on the ones the weld method works on. I did one each way during my header installation.
Is your Y pipe the T style or does it actually look like a Y or ram's horn? If it's the T you will see and feel a bit of performance gain by upgrading to a true Y design setup.

I was looking at the SPD Performance Y Pipe mod, I have the "rams horn" y pipe that needs to go away.
A welder is probably going to be an early father day present for this project.

Haha, the ram's horn style is the GOOD one! This is the T style that MUST DIE. The new piece is the Y pipe from my Banks headers which is a huge improvement in design over that crazy T thing.

I miss spoke (typed), it is the T and not the Y.
