Plastic tank?

My current fuel tank is rusted. Making my filters get real dirty.

Any opinions on a plastic tank?

I have no personal experience in using a plastic tank but a friend got 1 for a Dodge Power Wagon a few years back. No problems in probably 8 years. Since the Broncos come with a skid plate around the gas tank I would think it would be okay to use. And I believe there are quite a few new vehicles using plastic tanks.

My brother had one in a Jeep for years before he came back to the Ford fold and had no issues with the plastic fuel tank.

I replaced the tank in my Bronco with a plastic tank. A plastic tank is better IMO because you don't ever have to worry about it rusting. I bought this one:
MTS 4251L Plastic Fuel / Gas Tank for 1985-1996 Ford Bronco Full Size 33 gallon tank at Gas Tank Depot.com

I apparently didn't get the sending unit seated properly and it leaks a little around the seal. I haven't gotten around to fixing it yet. Other than that no problems.

Manfred back in 1976, I owned a ford pinto, In 1977-1979 Ford had recalls on them for gas tank explosions ,1.5 million were recalled ,Ford installed a thick plastic piece between the tank and rear bumper . Engineering did studies and it solved that problem. It was one of the largest recalls of its time and Ford was sued for deaths .Plastic today is stronger and provides less weight ,Good luck TR

When I replace my tank, I'm going to get a plastic one. I've heard they're better in about every way. Just more expensive.

Beginning in 1975, the US Gov't forced Ford to recall them for gas tank explosions, 1.5 million were recalled. Ford installed a thick plastic piece between the tank and rear bumper.
The fuel tank was made with upper/lower sections spot welded together forming a 3/4" protruding lip. When rear ended, the lip hit the center of the axle housing, splitting the tank open.

This action also caused the fuel filler tube to pull out of the tank. The fix was a longer fuel filler tube, the thick curved plastic shield was placed between the tank and the rear axle center section.

During this time, I passed out dozens of the three different kits to mechanics. There was a fourth kit for Canada only.

Yes Number , I owned a 1976 , cant remember what year it was recalled .News flashes showed violent explosion resulting in deaths . It didn't have a lot of power but was a reliable vehicle that was affordable. Early 80-81 I bought a 73 pinto 4 speed .I Knew both had different motors , the 76 was automatic.TR

So far i like the tank..was a pain to get the filler hose installed cause the filler hose has a kink in it cause of how ford made them connect from filler neck over frame then to tank.

This mts tank had 2 other hose points one goes to the fillee neck but the one that it was suppose to go to was not drilled out but the other was. So i had to route it over the main filler hosr but it is barely on. May get a connector and another piece of hose and connect it better.

My tank was seeping where the top and bottom seam is. I replaced it with a plastic one probably 20 years ago and have never had a problem.
