1/4 mile

I'm going to be in the market for a new truck come 2017 and I have my eye on a f250. I have to admit, i don't do much towing (summer boat and jet skis) but I really like the looks of the F250. A big part of my decision between getting a gas or diesel is the fun factor, and speed plays a big part in that. So with all things being as equal as possible, which would win in a 1/4 mile race..the 6.2 gas or 6.7 diesel truck?

The 6.7.....It has a Turbo. I have had them both and when I get a new one again this fall it will be another 6.2. The 6.2 with 4.30 gears and an eventual 5star tune will have lots of fun factor.
1/4 times in a truck combined with fun factor can be best had with the F150 3.5 EcoBoost. That is a rocket....I had one of those too. If you're into speed and trucks, that is the route I recommend.

If you want 1/4 mile speed, get an F-150. The Super Duty trucks are powerful, but heavy. They are build for towing and hauling, not racing.

I dunno, a 6.2 with a 4.30 or more rear end might make some noise when launched right.

6.7 is a torque monster but there is too much power to get it laid down in a 1/4 mile.

Turbo lag, big transmission that doesn't lock up the torque converter soon enough just leaves you waiting for 3-4 seconds before you feel the big power come in.

The 6.7 KILLS it between 45-90 mph though. No contest there.

It is surprisingly close - the gas truck does 0-60 in 8.5 seconds, and the quarter in 16.6 @ 87mph.

The diesel does 0-60 in 8 seconds, and the quarter in 16.2 @ 86mph.

In real life, once you are already moving, the diesel seems to provide an immense torque thrust that rips you to a higher speed quite effortlessly. I've had both - driving a 6.7L now, had two previous 6.2Ls, and have a '17 6.2L on order. Both my gas trucks had 3.73 rear ends, and I always felt the gas trucks launched poorly. The diesel doesn't launch that well either, brake torquing helps pre-spool the turbo, but it wastes time rapidly shifting through the short initial gears.

I'm surprised at the slightly higher trap speed of the gas truck - meaning it is gaining slightly on the diesel at higher speed - but as far as towing is concerned, it is just over for the gas engine.

I don't know about 'fun factor', these are heavy duty pickup trucks. I will say that the current Super Duty is probably the worst handling of any domestic heavy duty pickup. You want fun buy one of the sporty F-150's, I have a friend that has an F-150 Tremor and he loves it.

I've driven a few 6.7's and a few 6.2's. They are similar on accelerating unloaded. Put a heavy trailer on and of course the diesel will out do the gasser.

The numbers I quoted earlier were from Car & Driver, a test of the 2011 models. They were the upgraded 400/800 spec diesels, but obviously the diesel has since added 40bhp and 60lb-ft more. Car & Driver did test a 2015 model, but it was a dually. I saw another test that seemed less concrete of a SRW 2015, and it pulled a 7.8...shaving off 0.2 seconds...which seems about right.

On the other hand, the 2011 gas model tested by C&D had the 3.73 gears, so the 4.30 gears probably would have improved it as well.

Fairly close on paper, but with a heavy load, its all diesel...

The F150's don't do anything for me. I have a 99 cobra that fills my "racing" need. I just want something that can get from light to light quicker than my suv.

F250 6.2 4.30gear and the new torqshift-g. That is your best bet for light to light driving.

I can't wait for the 17's to hit the dealer lots. I want to test drive the 6.2 and the 6.7 to help make up my mind. This choice has been on my mind for a couple of months now.
