If you replaced your original Super Duty unit bearings, then by definition, you've had a Timken bearing failure(s).


Not trying to be argumentative, just pointing out the obvious: The OEM so called "Super Duty" unit bearings are made by Timken. And they are routinely needing to be replaced, as early as 70K miles.

By contrast, my wife severely overloaded two Honda Civics with business catalogs and samples stacked door to door, floor to ceiling. If you've ever carried a bankers box full of papers, you know how heavy solid paper can get. Now visualize about 20 banker's boxes. I even removed the rear seats and front passenger seat to make more room for her to carry more. She put 350,000 miles on each of those cars. Some 700,000+ miles... and not ONE wheel bearing failure. Contrast that to the Super Duty's 70,000 mile Timken wheel bearing failures.

I know that well over a century ago Timken invented the tapered roller bearing, and has been, and still may be, the premier bearing manufacturer in the world. But I'm sorry, this unit bearing failure business is just that... good business for them, but bad for consumers.

 

Just bought Timken bearing 515025 for my Dually. Up dating to late model on my early model F350. Auto Zone, I don't buy there much, but has 20% off on line with 10.oo gift card sent in the mail till 15th I believe. It was 169.oo plus tax here in California. I was going to buy from 1A auto but they when up 17.oo in the last week, so it was cheaper here with free shipping also.

 

I did the same thing to my e99. I already had one Timken fail at about 45k miles. The warranty was still good and AZ replaced it with no questions asked. Still a pain in the rear.

Which replacement rotors did you go with since you had to account for the offset.

 

Life time Bosch from O'Rileys. Almost went OEM since i have 200K on these but have a friend that has had great luck with these. 1A auto had a life time warranty on these same hubs but raised there price again so I thought why not. I hope they last longer than that. Did you have the Dually? I see you do, Mine are still in route, left Wednesday.

 

How hard is it to convert back to a spindle setup. I say it done years ago on Xtreme 4x4.
Luckily I have a 2 wheel drive dually.

I have a new in the box Timken wheel assembly that was "left over" from having to replace one while on the road about a month ago. Did not make me happy to buy a Carquest one in an emergency. So one of the two I already had is now "extra". Hadn't got to replacing them when had to leave on family emergency trip. Good thing it didn't fall off when going 70.
Caught it quick when ABS light came on. Stopped immediately and found the problem. Wheel seized up when going up the ramp on the flatbed tow truck. I was blessed that day.
Have it on Craigslist for $185. Slightly less than what I paid from Amazon.

Well, my two cents. Recently bought an SKF unit from NAPA, decided not to wait. 250+. Can't track down where made, but says "printed". Either way, if the ones you buy don't come with the four studs, buy them. When I replaced both hubs the first time (4 years ago) could not get all of the studs out. Wasn't worth the effort on the ones that did come out. By the way, pretty sure those hubs were China, went cheap and bought for about 130 ea. But lasted until recently. Never know. And, I replaced rear rotors, bought from Ford, Motorcraft, made in China. Just sayin.
