How To Change The Internal Regulator In Your Alternator

Where did you get the replacement regulator?

First I need to say I have a "large body" 6G Ford alternator. I bought it from Quick Start (alternator parts) a couple of years ago. Im sure they have parts for stock alternators and I only paid $40 for the new regulator.

How to: Remove unit form truck (duh). Looking at the back, remove the 3 5/16" bolts holding the back cover on. With the unit secured in a vise (via mounting bosses, not the body or pulley), carefully pry the back cover away from the body. This will reveal the regulator and rectifyer. The regulator is held on with 3 torx head screws. Remove them and it should slide right off the shaft. Your new regulator should come with a retainer holding the brushes in place, do not remove until you have it in place and screwed on to the unit. Reassemble. Do not over torque the 3 bolts. The pic is not mine but exactly the same.

First thing I thought of when I saw his response.

I also have another alternator "How To" in the pipeline being created by another member as he finds time. But y'all know me, multiple how-to's in the tech folder are a good thing!
