Oil pump drive shaft to short

I replaced my 1976 f250 390 distributor with an HEI. The oil pump drive shaft fits about a 1/4 of an inch further into the new distributor causing no oil flow. Has anyone had this problem? Would it be easier if I tried to find a rod longer than 8.53" by 1/4 hex or take the oil pan off and try to put on a factory clip that holds the rod down?
