Turbo rebuild

Ok guys I am going to be rebuilding my turbo on the 2001 f350. It is stock and needs to be done since I believe the previous owner never did it. I would like to hear your thoughts on the whether to go with stock fins or upgrade? Which one do you recommend and whatever else I might need to do to get the most out the old girl. She pulls a 20' enclosed trailer with old car and a HD cruiser. She sits on 37X13.50 with a 6" lift. Banks air intake with banks big mouth waste gate. Hope to get some good feedback and start looking at getting the parts to rebuild..

Thanks

I went with the spturboost 5/5 billet wheel upgrade and the 360 rebuild kit. Since that is my only turbo upgrade I can only compare to stock. That being said, I am very happy with it. My truck builds boost faster, plus I am able to consistently maintain 25lbs of boost. (Limiting it with a TM wastegate control @ the initial setpoint) Sorry I really cant comment on the banks stuff as I have no experience with it. I also retained and rebuilt my EBPV valve while I had the turbo out since it had started leaking oil from the shaft. The rebuild was very straight forward, hardest part was leaning over the engine bay to R&R the turbo.

Spturboost.com has great quality kits, any questions contact Kevin he will set you straight. As for my own experience same as above stock 5 and 7 blade wheel to SPX, the best decision ever made, faster spool, perfect for towing, as much as 200° egt reduction while towing (mods in signature on my obs) almost all memeberswith the SPX wheel have been hapy. Noise its actually quieter than the stock 7 blade wheel.

360 full rebuild kit from SPT and a billet wheel from RiffRaff is the route I took and I am very happy with the outcome.

I was pretty nervous about tearing into my turbo to rebuild and upgrade it. Although, I had the SPTurbo and RiffRaff instructions right in front of me and it was not too bad at all.

The point when you get it all back together and all the bolts tightened down and you go to turn the compressor wheel to make sure there is no rubbing on contact was a pretty tense moment. I got lucky and on my first shot it turned freely and looked great!

Before the upgrade to 360 bearing and billet wheel.

RiffRaff 4/4 on left and stock on right

New wheel installed and a fresh coat of high temp paint to make it fancy...

Sous - how would you compare the spool up to the old wheel?

The typical result from what others have said.

Seems much more responsive/faster spool based on the throttle/exhaust input into the system. I honestly feel that the SPX and RiffRaff 4/4 wheel are pretty fairly matched. The SPX may be a bit louder in regards to whine, but that is only based on visual inspection of the blades.

The RiffRaff 4/4 well does have more whine noise than the stock wheel, but in combination with the AIS intake it is by no means unbearable or loud. I am 100% satisfied with how the wheel performs in addition to the high flow outlet I installed on the turbo at the same time.

Below is the review I wrote on the wheel after installing it. Direct link clicky.

RR 4/4 Turbo Wheel - I was really torn between ordering the RR 4/4 wheel or the SPX billet wheel. I decided on the RR wheel simply because of the feedback on FTE about it. I wanted a billet wheel for faster spooling, more response to the turbo, more air, etc. I did not want something that was going to scream at me the entire time the truck is running. I have no, zero, zilch experience with any of the billet wheels out there available to use, but am happy I went with RR. Would I be happy with the WW2 or SPX, probably but I only wanted to do this one time and then be done with it. The wheel spools up quickly, but I am sure some of that can be attributed to the new uppipes. It whistles a bit more than the stock wheel, but not until it gets to around 13 PSI. I saw up to 22 PSI when out running around, but it was hard to keep an eye on the gauge and the road at the same time. The wheel installed very nicely and looked to be a quality product and something that I would expect from Clay. RiffRaff has gotten a lot of my money already, and will get a lot more in the future.

This is on a e99 turbo with spt parts and spx wheel.

And heres what I used to remove the rust if you decide to clean up the exhaust housing a bit.
