Replace all cylinder locks or re-set the tumblers?

The PO installed a different door on my 1994 F350, but never changed the drivers side cylinder lock. I found an aftermarket set that includes both door cylinders and ignition cylinder locks for $80. I'd like one key for all cylinder locks.

1. Is it possible to mess with the tumblers on the non-matching lock and get it to work with my key? If so, has anyone done this and how difficult is this? How do you do it?

2. Has anyone found a less expensive set?

3. Any other options?

I mean a locksmith could probably re-pin the locks for you, but $80 really isn't that bad for 3 lock cylinders with a matching set of keys. I mean that's what, 1.5-2 fuel fillups?

Automotive applications use wafer locks for a variety of reasons so there's no tumblers. I've never tried to disassemble a ignition switch or door cylinder and I'd be surprised if they were made to be disassembled and re-keyed. If you want to re-key a wafer lock you'll need to have the right wafers on hand for the key you want to use (unless you have the resources to accurately make your own).

Go try and disassemble a junkyard ignition and door cylinder and see how easy it is to re-key it. If it's doable then get a handful of junkyard locks for the wafers you need and re-key whatever you need to re-key. This is what I'd do if I needed to re-key a lock.

Pull your drivers door lock cylinder out if you are able & carry it & your ignition key to a competent locksmith. Most can re-pin it to match in their sleep. If you have a small aluminum disk with numbers that came with the truck's keys, they can I-d it from that.

Any competent locksmith can re-key your locks , but in my area at least , that out weighed the cost of replacement .
