'04 F450 6.0L High Rev Kill

Has anyone experienced a 6.0L revving to extreme high RPMs and kill? Blow turbo was replace, fired right up but upon pulling it out while giving it lower RPMS (2000) engine over revved and killed - Now crank but no start. Checked everything. Removed valve covers, checked injectors, great fuel pressure. Any ideas?

Easiest way to kill these is by cutting off the air. Early motors have a throttle plate that can be modified for this application.

Was crankcase oil introduced to the induction system? How high did you go(5K RPM and they're done)? Any major oil leaks afterwards? Have you checked pushrods yet? Compression test? Did the oil drain itself all over the ground?

I have read of a couple that was towing a heavy fifth wheel camper with their 05 F450 out west on a steep grade, and while going down the other side with tow/haul mode selected, the engine quit. Long story short, they had it towed to a dealer and the computer said the engine was over revved. the bill was over $17k to rebuild the engine.

17K to rebuild a 6.0 is retarded and way too much money. You need to stop reading on the internet and start looking at your truck's engine to see what damaged it caused. I would suspect the bottom end, but you could pull the pan off to confirm or deny any broken pieces. Last thing you could take it somewhere and have them deal with it. Let us know.

These 6.0s can hit 4000RPM easily AND I've even see higher than 4500, no problems.

Damm greedy dealers. You can get a full dress engine for 13K from Ford.
So 4K to install? I call that BS.

You can check it out here, Our Major One-Time Expenses.

They are full time rvers, were on the other side of the country. Had no choice or bargaining power. The cost included everything; including towing the truck to the dealer, towing their camper to the next event they were attending and all truck repairs. I agree it was ridiculously high, but what do you do in that situation? They even considered trading trucks, but it was still in their best interests to just fix it. Anyway, he never used tow/haul again and I don't blame him, whether or not that is what caused it doesn't matter at that point.

I would like to know more about the new trucks. I thought they had real jake brakes? Are they only using the turbo vanes to help with the stopping?

I can tell you that I would rather pay for somebody to haul the trailer, truck and my family back home before I paid 17K for an engine.....You could just total the truck and buy a replacement for that cost. There is no way to justify spending that much money on an engine for these trucks IMO.

I am doubting the op over revd and killed the engine. I reread the post and seems the op just did some work. I bet something was missed or has failed due to the work that was done. Just my 2 cents.

We routinely see bad diagnosis followed by bad decisions... I'm not surprised. A real shame these things happen, with some good education on these truck, thus would have been avoided.

Nothing...
dealers that hire UN-experienced tech's, I'm sure are doing this at all levels of car maintenance. They don't fix your car anymore they replace parts.... and keep replacing them until they hit the mark or you stop going there to complain!

Wife drives a Volvo XC-60, the small SUV. She pay's for maintenance because she can't afford to be out a car for her job. They give a rental car and she writes the cost off. They actually tried to charge her $400 for a cabin filter, that was for a filter, not counting putting it in.... that was $135 more..... she was going to do it and then came to her sense's and called me.

My wife has been driving a XC90 (2.5T, AWD) since 2007. Nothing but good stuff to say about the car or the service places we've been to. It getting older now (2005 model) so its time to make a change but dang, that thing has been solid. The oil changes are a little high ($140) but the dealer where we take it has even replaced a few small parts like the plastic rings around the door lock buttons, lug nut covers, and the latch for the fuel door lock and put N/C on the bill! I want to say the cabin filter is $65. Thinking of buying another one

with exception of a few things like this, they have always done a good job. As you mentioned, fixed a few small things at N/C. Our second Volvo, I'd buy another... used of course.
