Sunday July 31st

Got just a few hours this evening, so only got a few things done.

The flashers on the left side weren't working, so I assumed it had to be something in the wiring for that side. After a bunch of YouTube videos on how a flasher relay is setup, and a bunch of testing, I finally tracked it back to a defective (despite being new) bulb in the rear, and an improperly grounded light housing in the front. After some rust clean-up + new hardware in the front, and a new bulb in the rear, I'm back in business.

And I guess that's what I get for assuming. I should always check the simple stuff first...

Also, I've been trying to figure out why the driver's side of the truck sits 1 1/2" lower than the passenger. On level ground, and jacks of equal height, the difference was within 1/8" - so I'm starting to think maybe the leaf springs on the driver's side are broken / worn out.
  • left flashers working
  • seat belt bolts secured and torqued down

I think next it's time for the exhaust and to have a pro take a look at all the work I've done to make sure it looks OK.

The garage I took the truck to said the brakes, brake lines, fuel lines, etc. etc. all look good!

However, on the way there I noticed there was a good few inches of loose play in the steering (maybe steering box rebuild?), and I seem to have an electrical issue.

Upon closer investigation, it looks like the PO did some elements of the 6V - 12V conversion (like the battery), but left other elements undone (like the generator).

I guess I'll tackle that next...

I braved the heat for a number of hours today to install the exhaust and uninstall the carburetor (for planned rebuild).

The exhaust took a lot longer than I expected due to broken bolts on the manifold as well as really unclear routing. I ended up stopping with the straight pipe just in front of the passenger rear wheel.

After moving some things around, I was able to work the exhaust all the way to the back.
And the carb rebuild is complete!

Had to mess with the carb a little more to get it to stop leaking all the way. I think it's all good now.

I grabbed an optical tachometer on Amazon for $15, set the idle to 500 rpm, and then hooked up the vacuum gauge to set the idle mixture screw (19 in/Hg)

I noticed before disassembly that the choke was set to stay closed just a little bit when the choke was all the way in. With the idle adjusted properly, I was able to adjust the choke to be wide open as it should be.

I was then able to install the new regulator and the rebuilt generator.

Finally, I took the passenger side fender off, and started prepping it for the patch panel.

First patch panel in

Alright, got my first patch panel in place.

Up next is the driver's side fender, then door bottoms, then hood lip...

These seats sure don't look like originals, so I guess redoing the foam and covers myself is out of the question. I sent out a request for quote to three auto upholstery shops. Hopefully it's not too much $$....

That's exactly right BossSVT.
It took me a lot more research and asking around, but that's just the conclusion I came to as well.
I ended up buying 64 gto foam, but am making my own covers.
Thanks!

Rear fenders

Got the rear fenders patched. I primer'd all the bare metal black for now.
Up next, door bottom patches - but probably need to get the windows working first.

Good progress!

What did you do about the belt extenders(you're talking about the buckle ends)? Are you using the Humvee kit? I am, and have the same issue.

Yea, as nice as that humvee kit was - especially for the price - the belts are really not long enough. I'd suspect in their original application, the belt spool mounts to around seat level as opposed to 18" below the seat on the floor.

I bought these extenders:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I'm a smaller guy, ~150lbs, so this works for me.
But even with the extenders, I wish I had a little more slack.

Hopefully you can see the extenders in this pic:

I must be blind. I can't see the extenders in the picture. I'm looking for the pieces you linked to on amazon.

I mounted the "spool" on that rib that runs along the back of the cab and around to the door jamb. I have plenty of extra belt. The problem for me is where it buckles. They aren't long enough to poke through the seat.
