Tempature Sensor

I CANNOT get the temp sensor out of my truck, Its on the back passenger side of the block and is extremely hard to access. Its stripped out now after working on it so long, I hit it with PB blaster and that didn't seem to help either. any tips would be great. its a 240 I6

Welcome to FTE

Was/is the sensor inop to begin with? One thing about these older trucks, the temperature gauge indications were always a little vague at best. Ok, a lot vague. What I'm getting at or trying to determine is whether you have been more or less wasting your time. If the truck doesn't overheat and the OEM gauge sort of moves that's about as good as it gets. If you're wanting to install aftermarket gauges there may be a better location for a new sender anyhow.

This is possible, but i was getting Voltage out of the wire, how would you go about testing the gauge without a good sensor?

Temp sensors are variable resistors so ground the sensor's wire and the gauge should peg.

A new sensor still might help. Who knows how much crud is built up on the sensor itself. It might look like a sideways stalagmite.

What HIO Silver was saying is the gauge works. Sounds like you do need to change the sensor. But you have it bunged up. Can you find some other place on the manifold to pick up water temp?

Deductive reasoning would lead me to conclude that the temp sender is bad and needs to be replaced.

My bad was thinking V8. I6 has plug into head. You just need to keep at it. Try a socket that works on stripped heads or a large stud extractor

Pull the motor. (kidding!)

How about a pic? Yeah, vise-grips do work pretty good, if you're not planning on reusing whatever it is (er, was).

On my 64 when I first got it spent a while trying to get a reasonable TEMP indication. It would never even crack 160. Spent over $20 on a new ICVR and replaced the sender. Still reads low. It never overheats, and even in the coldest Iowa weather the heater will run you out, so I suppose it doesn't matter. It bugs me though.

I can barely get vice grips on it, and when they are on it i cant turn it at a perfect right angle which causes it to tork off. An 11/16th is the correct size but it turns in circles.
