C6 to ZF5 questions, year differences

Planning on swapping the power train in my '56, 460's are a common enough swap but ZF5s are not.

The engine I'm looking at comes with a C6, I'm unsure at this point when the engine was made and unsure what all I will need to get the 460 to match up to the ZF5 if there are year differences. Most I've found thus far is a difference in the clutch I'll need after 1979. Will any year of 460 match up to a ZF5?

The engine is mildly built. The C6 doesn't have any problems but it's 2wd and I'm going 4x4 and prefer a manual. I currently have an S5-42 to use out of a '95 F350.

Also I'm having trouble finding diagrams of the ZF5, I'm not sure what all I need to be hooking up to it as well as how to properly set up a hydraulic clutch as I'm use to much older systems. Without haven taken it out myself I'm not sure what all I have and I'm having trouble finding any pictures of what it should look like installed.

Thanks.

The bell housing pattern is the the same for all 460's make sure to get a 460 flywheel. Get a fly wheel that will allow the use of a 12 inch clutch. The slave cylinder is externally mounted. Would probably opt for the complete assemble and adapt it to the truck. Good luck. O'reillys has new flywheels for $111.00

There are two different length slave cylinders for the ZF5. I do not know the part numbers/ year split. I am doing a similar swap in my 78 F250. If I find out before you about the hydraulics I will post it here.

Thanks

Anyone have a picture of the slave cylinder set up? Mine came with one but I'm missing the piece that connects to the clutch.

Engine looks like it's out of a '77, but it's been rebuilt so I'm unsure what all got changed just yet.

Is the cross member for a C6 the same as a ZF5?

Apparently you can. You have to have a neutral balance flywheel (take the one that came with the zf to a machine shop to have the weight removed) and everything else will work.

Are they external for a 460? My small block zf has an internal slave cylinder.

Pretty sure the one for the 460 is external. I'll take a picture in about an hour. About to leave work

They flywheel will be decided by which block and which rotating assembly you use. Read this post. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/8...-balanced.html

Is there an easy way to tell if a 460 is internally or externally balanced if it's been rebuilt? It looks like in 79 they went external, the engine I'm looking at is a '77, but I don't know what all parts got swapped when it was rebuilt.

I am doing something similar, wasn't sure if my 460 was internally or externally balanced. If they are externally balanced, they have weights on the flywheel and behind the balancer on the front of the motor. Of course, the flywheel is hard to see, but the weight on the balancer was clearly visible from the bottom (and maybe the top, depending on accessories). The weight itself looks like a wedge (or an ax head) that is between the balancer and the block on the crank. If it is internally balanced there will just be a spacer there.
