Ive got a 2008 with a 6.4 sitting in my driveway , needs $12-$14,000 worth of fuel system work. A very nice Lariat truck that is basically worthless.
I can buy a pretty nice truck for the $14,000

Wait... Who is charging you 12 grand????? Most independent shops can get that price down around 6-8 on a 6.4. Have you already pulled the fuel rails and checked for metal???

Ive checked 3 or 4 places they have all quoted close.
There was metal in the filter or so they said.

Do me a favor... Pull the upper filter and take a picture of the inside of the fuel bowl and filter.

To give you an idea of what they are trying to charge you... I can have my motor pulled, completely refreshed, Navistar HD Pistons, single turbo, stg 2 cam, studs, heads machined/o-ringed, 6.0 exhaust manifolds, up pipes, injectors, and hpfp for $15000-$17000..... Provided my block is still good and I don't need a new set of heads.

You can get a long block straight from ford for less than they are trying to charge you for the fuel system.

That said, there is still an insane amount of labor involved... But not $12000 worth of labor/parts.

Ill take pic tomorrow its pouring rain.
Its probably cheaper where you are than here and diesel shops don't have much completion theres only one in the town I live and the next ones are 150 miles either way.

Well, that was not what I was hoping to read but I called the diesel repair place I take my 6.0 excursion to and nearly jumped through the phone to smack me upside the head. Ok, he wasn't that wild but he was very clear that getting a 6.4 would make me see him more than I do now with the 6.0.

Confirmed everything written here.

Thanks!

I love my truck... It has been the most reliable vehicle I have ever owned.

But I also knew what I was getting into when I put the money down. I have a goal for the truck and have no intention of trying to make a living with this truck. It is simply a hobby. I want to build the motor and see if I can manage 400k miles...

If you don't have a reason to want a 6.4 I say skip it. If you need a reliable diesel that you don't need to think about, bulletproof a 6.0 and never worry about it. If you want the comfort spring for a 6.7... Simple as that.

I'm not sure what you guys are talking about but my 08 6.4 is a great runner. I use it to pull my 5th wheel camper weighing 10000 lbs back and forth to Florida at 3000 miles a trip. I change oil every 5-6 thousand miles and fuel filters every 2 years. The truck just turned over 50000 miles and the only thing I don't like about it is the clean exhaust filter light comes on sometimes 2 times a day when traveling. I really like my truck with the 6.4 Diesel engine.

A shot into the fuel bowl without the filter in, and a shot of the filter itself.

Its also worth letting fuel drain from the filter into a clean black cap. You will be able to see metal shavings that way.

I have almost 47k on mine and its been great!! I do all my own Maintenance , use syn 5-40, fuel additive every fill up, burn B-50 + in the summer months and change the fuel filters once a year as I only put on about 4k miles a year lately.....Been tuned since 15k miles I think.
