if there is a prolblem with gas milage it usually points to o2 sensors. i would first clean the maf then replace the o2 sensors before the cat since they are the only ones with control over the a/f ratio

I have an '02 and even though mine is the 4.6L V8 I still get about 14.5 city and can get 18 on a long trip. I have done a few mods to help like Flowmasters and a MAC cold air intake but I have a hard time keeping my foot of the gas. Love the sound it makes.

Well I now know that I'm not the only person getting bad mileage in an explorer. I'm sure that having 4:10 gears doesn't help either. It sure gets off the line quick though.

Ron, I noticed you listed the weight of your 20' Bayliner as 2500# - is that just the boat or the whole rig? Reason I'm asking, I had my 17' Reinell bow-rider weighed (135 horse 4-banger, on the single-axle trailer, with 10 gallons in the tank) and it came in at 2960# with 190# tongue weight. Anyway, I average 15-16 mpg when towing, but I have some goodly-sized hills to pull on the way to the lake so can't maintain an even speed.

I have an 02 Ford Explore Sport Trac SLT with the 4.0 V6. I am only able to get 12 mpg no matter if i'm hammering it or not even touching it. There is a K&N air filter and a Magnaflow muffler with the resonator cut off also. When it was really cold i was picking up about 8 to 10 depending. I'm seeing some people get 16-20 mpg and i'm lost. I love the truck, just hate how its 80 bucks every week or every other. As far as i can tell to look at the 02 sensors and a bearing but other than that it sounds good and runs smooth i just don't know after that.
