Identifying a ZF transmission and Trans case, what year?
hello everyone,
my 1991 F150 decided that it no longer liked the front pump seal in its automatic transmission, so i will remedy the situation with a 5 speed swap. I have most ofthe parts rounded up to do the swap properly, and the transmission i am planning on using is a ZF tranny and matching transfer case that I pulled out of a parts truck years ago.
i think i want to go through the transmission, have it freshened up, bearings, syncros, etc, but i am not sure of the exact year i pulled it out of.
here's what I do know.
it was a bricknose truck, so it had to be 87-91.
It was an F250.
It was a straight six truck. I was surprised to find the ZF behind a straight six.
It was quite possibly the rustiest truck I had ever parted out.
now, is there some sort of identification tag or number or something to further identify the tranny? or are all ZF's from 87 to 91 identical year to year? i know the T case changed in 92, but im trying to figure out what to identify this as when i go looking for replacement parts.
The actual transmission is at the farm, i'll be going to retrieve it in the next weekend or so.

There should be a tag on the transmission with both a Ford and ZF part number on it. In terms of a rebuild kit, they are all the same. ZF used to have service information, parts list, and a part number cross-reference on their website, but it appears they have updated their website and I can't find that information.

The 1345 has a smooth front section whereas the 1356 has some ridges/ribs where the bolts are. The chain of the 1345 is in the back section of the case whereas the 1356 case splits dead center over the chain area. The 1345 does not have a bolt on rear bearing retainer/tail housing. The 1356 does. The 1345 never came with a slip yoke whereas most 1356s in trucks did.
