Thinking about getting a F250 but need a little knowledge
Hi, I'm new to the truck scene so I have a few questions and want to know if this is a good deal. A guy has an 2000 f250 super duty 4x4 super crew cab? (the one with 4 doors) and it's a v10 (I know this is a diesel forum but bare with me. It was hit while parked.
1. Needs a passenger fender, door is salvageable, but the suspension is the big problem.
2. The front passenger leaf spring is broken. Is it called a leaf spring? It looks almost like the back leaf spring is why I call it that
3. The steering gear box is toast. There is A LOT of play in the wheel and it clunks but the wheels don't move. When it clunks the pitman arm has very slight movement
I haven't tried to start it and move the wheels I was just shooting the breeze with him and he said he would sell it for $2000. It only had 178k miles so I figure it's a good deal... what do you guys think?

For $200, I'd be all over it! Start the engine and listen for exhaust leaks. Check the transmission fluid condition and the condition of the other fluids.
It probably needs a few thousand dollars worth of parts to make it road worthy if you are willing to do the work.
Could turn out to be a good truck, or money maker for you if you play it right.
Let us know how it goes.

Ok, for that money, it could still be a good truck, just maybe not a money maker once you get it fixed.
Black oil is ok but listen to the engine run and check it out like you would any other used truck and make your best judgement.
It's gonna cost money to get it up and running, but if you can do it on the cheap, you should have a good truck.

What is the front leaf spring thing called? Or am I using the right terminology? I would be doing all the work myself but it "looks" as if once the leaf spring thing is changed and a new gear box it would be drivable. I already found a gear box for 30 bucks. Maybe being optimistic but I'm thinking 200 bucks will get it on the road minus fender and or if I need it a door.

The front is called a leaf spring, but if you are going to replace just the one side, make sure you get a spring that matches the trucks front spring code.
Used parts on these trucks are a crap shoot, especially when you are dealing with steering parts. The steering boxes in these trucks don't tend to hold up well.
When I said a few thousand bucks to get it back running, I was including paint on new body panels and any other sort of issues that may come up.

Oh ok if I get it I may get a new one then.... How do I find out the spring code? And I'm unbelievably lucky when it comes to finding matching parts. I bought a wrecked 06 Town car (my daily now) a few years ago for $650. It needed a hood, headlights, bumper cover, radiator, ac condenser, oil cooler, and core support. I drove a 12hr round trip to get those parts (left the night before valentines day so the ol lady wasn't pleased but I made it back in time for our dinner reservations), the parts were the same color as my car, and I paid under 200 for all of it (besides the core support which i found locally for 50... and locally the cheapest I found a hood for was $500 and that was used and not the same color (the hood is aluminum). The headlights where 200 for a set. When I'm hunting for parts I won't stop until I get what I need for for cheap lol, sometimes it just takes awhile but I've learned to be patient to save a buck.

Well I have the suspension squared away. I had to replace both leaf springs (upgraded to U code springs), track bar (was bent, and it took me 6 hrs to figure it out), and both sway bar end links. Cost me under $50 but I still need new U bolts... but I can't find them locally, I talked to a guy and he said that normally u bolts are rusty, hard to get off, and the threads stretch so far out u can't reuse. I told him I unloosened mine with a Cresent wrench with no breaker bar and they came off very easy. He was amazed and said he would reuse. Is that safe?
Now to the steering... I drive the truck around the block and the steering wheel was literally EVERYWHERE! I was trying to go straight the truck was going to the left, I turn the wheel right and it goes right a little, the back left, then back right, lol it was an adventure going 15mph around the block. Can someone offer any tips on replacing the steering gear box? Does the track arm bracket need to be removed to replace it? I'm gonna do some searching but any help will be useful.
Also what's this part that looks like a shock on the front axle, and why doesn't my truck have it? Do I need one?
