When going down the highway and in 4th gear, all is quiet. But as soon as I shift to 5th you can hear a low screechy whine after letting out the clutch. What could this be?

I just got done replacing my M5R2 (M5OD) with a reman.

There was a design problem with this tranny from the factory. Some time ago Ford came out with an upgrade for 5th. The part is still available but runs $650. There was going to be no savings if I had this part built into my tranny, which had 165,000 on it, so I just used mine as a core.

If you do decide at some point to fix the problem, it seems the best way to deal with it is to trade an un-upgraded M5 core for a rebuilt, Upgraded M5. Mine ran $1325 w/ 12/12 warranty. I was looking at a reman on Ebay for $650 but couldn't understand how the guy could sell em for that when the part alone from Ford costs that. Although I suppose that he could be starting with a core that had been upgraded in the past.

When I drained the fluid out of my tranny to begin removal, the fluid was completely flecked with pulverized aluminum and the ATF was only 3 mos. old.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 30-Jan-02 AT 00:55 AM (EST)]I was wondering about the synchronizer.
I also wonder why it din't start this whine untill after a clutch job back in Sept. And has gotten a little louder as time goes on.

Thanks to all Ford Men

If my OD went out, I'd be inclined to just run it as a 4 speed, so long as the damage dosen't spread. But then you would want OD if you have anything more than about a 3.08 rear end.

INLINE SIX POWER!
300 Cubic Inches of Low RPM Truck Torque! And twin-I-beams too!
