That would make sense, but it's not how it worked. It had to do with whether there was a rear tank (I think), or possibly if there was a skid plate under the rear tank.

There's really no good answer. Under the bed the tire carrier rusts out, the rim gets full of salt crap and you lose a lot of ground clearance. In the bed it steals cargo space.
Doesn't help with the pallet issue but if plywood is a priority, simply block the tire up with a 2x4 or similar and a few sheets will pass under. If you have a lot of sheets, unmount the spare and strap it to the top of the sheets.

Like you said though, no really good way. Hmm, wonder if mine will fit between my front ranch hand and grill?

Does anyone have information on what years/models the 2 different tire carriers will fit? Anyone have a compatibility chart?

It should be noted that the 49" long one has a Ford logo stamped on it but couldn't find one on the smaller one.

Also, is there any function for the tube like piece that is at one end of the large bracket?

Here's a photo of the tire carriers.

Does anyone else have some ideas regarding the smaller one? I have come across many that measure ~ 49" but no other ones for the 44.5".

According to LMC Truck, which lists both spare tire channels, the 45" inch channel is for 1993 - 1996 Ford F250s models over 8,500 lbs. GVW.

The "tube piece" allows you to use the lug wrench handle to lift the wheel and carrier back up into place.

Another solution is to put a front hitch on and use a hitch mounted carrier.
