If it's an automatic, it has the 4R100. Original fluid for it called for Mercon, but I believe mercon V works too. Someone else will confirm.

If it is an automatic it is a 4R100. It takes MERCON V fluid.

Man thanks for the quick response.
It's an auto with overdrive.

At my local Walmart and they don't have it, anyone recommend somewhere affordable?

Walmart should have a multipurpose fluid that should work. Some don't like them but I have used them without issue.

I wouldn't use anything but a certified Mercon V in that thing. I've used multipurpose fluids in the past like fordmerc suggests, but you can get the correct fluid for only a little bit more.

You can get Mercon V in Wal-mart's "Supertech" brand inexpensively.

Alright alright, so all stick with merc v, is super tech a quality fluid? I'm sure they brand other fluids.

I'm willing to spend but at near 20qts, I'd like to spend smart and have a lasting tramsmission. Also I'd like to use synthetic fluids, just believe it's better in the long run.

So, since we are on the fluid subject, and Mark is online right now, I'm wondering some specifics as to using mercon vs mercon V in the 4r100.

I used mercon in a 4r100 in a 2002 7.3 that towed a 10k pound trailer for most its life and finally gave up at 300k miles.

I'm wondering what the benefits of mercon V vs regular mercon are in these?

Can you add Mercon V to one that has mercon in it say if you were doing a pan drain?

Sorry if these questions have already been answered and my apologies for the thread hijack.

And thanks for any input!!!

It's been about a year since I bought any, but the bottles indicated that it was certified to meet the requirements of Mercon V. That means more to me than just about anything else, because it meets the requirements set forth by those who designed the transmission.

I used supertech MerconV about 5k miles ago and haven't had any issues. Used the same in my P/S system as well.

Haha I don't care as long as I can find some merc v for a descent price!
Will update thread once I find some with a price.
Also while I'm at it what do people recommend for gear oils.

Front axle- Manual states "Hypoid Gear oil, 2.7L or 5.8 pints)
Does this work?
Valvoline High Performance 80W90 Gear Oil 1 Quart - Walmart.com

Transfer case- Manual says "Mercon ATF" Does this mean atf 3??

Rear axle- "sae 75-140" 3.3L or 6.9pints."
Easy enough
Super Tech 75W-140 Synthetic Gear Oil, 1 Quart - Walmart.com

Transfer case fluid is Motorcraft XL-12 now. As I understand it is rebranded Mercon. Mercon is no longer Certified/Licensed by Ford so they have XL-12.

Mercon V should not be used in the transfer case.

Do you have a rear LSD? If so you may need the friction modifier if the Supertech gear oil doesn't come with.

Good question, I'd have to look and see on the axle tag, hopefully its clean enough to make it out.

Motorcraft XL-12 does anyone a fluid equivalent to it?

I saw a valvoline synthetic in advanced auto the other day when I was getting some Mercon V for a fluid change and the bottle stated it met the xl-12 spec as well as spec for gm transfer case fluid as well as several others. It was $8.88 a qt I think. I almost grabbed a couple qts but decided to order some xl-12 instead. I don't like the universal fluids either.

I'm with Mike. I had Mobil ATF in my transfer case which meets the specs for several but eased my conscience by swapping to the XL-12.
