78-79 bronco spare tire carrier on 73-79 f150?

My truck currently has no place to keep a spare other than sitting in the bed. No under bed mount or anything. This is made more complicated because I have 37" tires.

Would using a rear spare carrier from a bronco work? If not, any recommendations for how to securely mount a large spare?

I'm glad you asked this question, I have the same issue. Currently I'm trying to locate a used or NOS Ford tire rack that mounts in front of the drivers side wheel well in the bed.

A bed mounted spare tire bracket and or a under the rear tank could be done easy enough.

A 78/79 bronco spare tire bracket could be mounted to a bed, but I think the 37" tire would be to much to hang off it. Especially when you swung it open to drop the tail gate, might tweak a bed side? That area of a Bronco looks to be reinforced.

What about a spare tire mount that is made to mount and swing off the rear bumper?

There is another spare tire mount and location option. Ford did offer a spare tire mount that mounted to the front bumper and grille of the trucks. Most commonly found on 250 camper specials, but can be just as easily mounted on any other 1/2, 3/4, and 1 ton truck. Although it may be a little harder to find. Check Craigslist, eBay, any other classified ad sited and paper, and also check salvage yards, swap meets and even flea markets. Never know what you'll find at those places.

A similar version was (may still be) available from R/V dealers.

Wasn't there a roll bar setup that included a spare tire mounting as well as a gaggle of lights? I Googled, "baja truck roll bar and spare tire mount" and got a lot of interesting images.

Hope someone's still watching...
I'm just starting to look into this problem myself. I've got a Reese hitch bolted under the truck and seem to have issues with getting the under tank spare carrier into place. Anyone done this setup and not had issues? Would love to know what you did...

Thanks for the illustrations NumberDummy! Will come in handy when I try and put it up.
But do you know of anyone who is still using the under tank/bed carrier with a Reese hitch installed? Feel like it's going to get in the way of the carrier?

I wouldn't know a Reese hitch from a Reese peanut butter cup!

A "Reese" is for a a brand name and is a hitch that normally goes from one frame rail to the other frame rail and is either bolted or weld mounted on the bottom and is a drop style hitch that has a 2" receiver tube out the back. Alot of times that style (cross tube) of hitch interferes with the OEM spare tire set up. Also been known to cause problems drooping the rear tank.

Sometime you have to move the hitch mount brackets further back or closer to the end of the frame rails.

Bronco quarter panels are reinforced. On my truck the tailgate was removed when it was damaged right after it was bought. After years of rough roads and hard use box sides cracked at floor. I wouldn't hang anything on a box side.
