Broken frame

I recently found out my frame is broken near the steering box. I had a local body shop to look at it but they said it couldn't be fixed. It seemed more like they just didn't want to mess with it though. So I thought I would go ahead and post here to see what others may think. I would rather fix it if possible and any advice would be helpful.

1st check to make sure the frame is of material that is weldable......back in the 80's Ford, GM, etc. used material that after being formed could not be welded as it would induce structural fatigue.

Assuming you are ok, yes, it is repairable......IMHO....weld everything up including all holes with new plate, I would also weld a diamond shape reinforning plate to the outside area as well....

Welcome to FTE.

Many shops shy away from repairs like that. Where I work had some Chevy based trucks that would crack like yours or near the engine mounts--they scrapped them. They did not want anyone coming back on the repair when the inevitable second failure came around.

But I digress.

This needs to be straightened, welded, and reinforced. 30+ years ago I had this done on a Dodge (not mine, a repo) for $300. I would reckon you are well north of $500 to do it now, IF you can find a shop to do it.

How is the rest of the truck? Any other frame issues, rust, engine ready to spit a rod, rats in the headliner? Is it worth what could hit $1000 for this repair?

What city are you near, maybe someone knows a shop near you.

And yes, as per prior post, some frames can't be welded due to heat treating or material, but any decent welder will figure that out. It's not the welding, it's how you weld it for the most part.

Thanks for the replys. The rest of the truck is good other than a few little minor issues. Runs good and the rest of the body and frame is in pretty good shape for its age. I don't mind paying extra to get it done as I really enjoy the truck. I will check around a few more places to see if I can find someone willing to do it.

Everything I've ever found indicates OBS frames are normal mild steel. Do you have a lift and tires? That crack is fairly common on lifted trucks. When I had a F150 do that I ground a V into the crack, welded it up, and plated over. It was never a problem again.

Yes it is lifted and with 35's on it. I too had heard it was more common with lifted trucks. I talked with a guy I used to work with who does welding on frames for 20yrs. He said he was confident he could fix it and add plates as well.

The biggest thing will be to pull all the frame pieces back into alignment, thn properly degrease, clean, grind and prep the area for welding.

I think it should be saveable, especially if it gets braced.
