5-speed leak ???

I have a problem with my 96 PS in that I have a leak in the trans I cant located. It only leaks about a pint in 4 to 5K miles. I appears to be coming from some where just above the cross member near the transfer case shiftier.
Have any of you had this problem? And if so what where your findings?
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks.

Could be a cracked rear extension housing. It is common.

Thanks for the prompt reply. If that is the problem I would guess the only fix would be 'new' housing/trans!

If that is the problem, the rear housing can be replaced. But, the transmission will have to be taken out of the truck and torn down because all the internals of the trans is connected to the rear housing. Everything in the trans will have to be put on the new rear housing, then put back into the case. There is a bearing race that will have to come out of the old housing and go into the new one, and you will need to get a new needle bearing for the shift rod and new seal for the output shaft. Those will more than likely get damaged trying to remove them.

Thank you. I will try and diagnose this further and see what I can find. It sounds like if the repairs need above are required it will be $$$$.

I pulled the truck apart. I pulled the carpet and removed the floor plate that covers the trans and the leak is not from the upper part of the trans. It is leaking below the transfer case sifter and just behind the x-member. I cleaned off the area with carb cleaner and I may have to put it all back together and drive it see what I can find. I thought the breather may have been plugged causing it to pressurize when it heated up but I pulled the breather and it was working fine. Any other ideas??
Thanks,
Jim
