Ice build up on running boards

Has anyone else noticed that ice and snow builds up on the running board mounts under the rear doors. When you open the door, it drags on the ice. Can anyone that lives in area that gets snow tell me if the factory splash guards help?

I have a 2013 Screw with Wearherteck splash guards and snow & ice buildup is minimal. I think the boards and mounts are nearly the same. I am near Marion OH so I get a little less snow than you.

Even with factory splash guards, there's ice build-up on top of the running boards below the rear doors. I get a lot of snow (and slush) and a few times found I had to watch out when opening the rear door.

I can't compare it without splash guards though, so don't have a quantitative comparison. I'm in Canada, and just finished up first winter with my '15.

(I don't think splash guard brand would make any kind of difference)

I have the ice build-up issue with splash guards.

Which is funny... I was considering the deployable running boards, but figured the ice build up would make them inoperable.

Oh well. I have gotten used to kicking the ice free before opening the doors.

The factory splash guards don't really hang down far enough to help. I put Dura-Flaps on my F250 & they do a much better job of knocking down the snow & other road crap. I'll get a set of these on my next truck.

What can be done to avoid this? I live in upstate NY and one cannot avoid the snow?

Your solution is with Step Bar Fillers. Go to Sharp Truck and search. They are stainless or black bent plates that go under the base of the board and up to the rocker in front of the support brackets which catch the snow and deposit it on the boards. Ford had them on the earlier Harley Edition truck’s, and based upon the latest 2020 Superduty pictures, they are coming back on all boards... or at least some.
