transmission code question

transmission code on my vin# plate is "c", looking at the decoder is says its a 3 speed ford light duty, "g" says automatic, this truck i have is an automatic, would it be correct to say the transmission has been changed? or could "c" mean it could also be an automatic 3 speed?

thanks dave

"G" could be either a C-4 automatic or, it could be for a C-6 automatic. It just depended on what the engine was. Bumpside Inline sixes or a 302 would have had a C-4. A 352, 360 or 390 would have had a C-6. --the 'small-block' C-6 wasn't installed behind a 302 until later on in the Dentside trucks.

In that case, you would have a C-6.

Roll under and check it out. Yours would be a C6 for that vintage and engine:
